Privacy Policy
Last reviewed on 2026-04-23.
This Privacy Policy explains how InchRuler.com ("we," "our," or "us") collects, uses, and shares information when you visit inchruler.com and use the online ruler tool. It applies to the website as a whole, including the ruler page, topic guides, and policy pages.
1. Who we are
InchRuler.com is an independently operated website that provides a free on-screen ruler for measuring objects in inches and centimeters. The site does not offer user accounts, does not process payments, and does not accept file uploads. For questions about this policy, email privacy@inchruler.com or write to us via the contact page.
2. Information we collect
2.1 Information you provide
The ruler is designed to work without any sign-up or submission. You do not need to create an account, and there are no forms on the site. If you choose to email us, we receive your email address and whatever you put in your message.
2.2 Information collected automatically
When you visit, standard web-request information may be collected, including:
- Device and browser data: browser type and version, operating system, screen resolution, device pixel ratio, language, and time zone.
- Usage data: which pages were visited, referring page, and general interaction events such as page load times.
- IP address: your IP is visible to our hosting provider and to third-party services such as Google Analytics and Google AdSense, which generally truncate or anonymize it before storage.
- Cookies and similar technologies: see section 4 below.
2.3 Local storage on your device
The ruler saves your calibration value (pixels per inch) in your browser's localStorage.
This data is stored on your device only and is not transmitted to our servers or to any third
party. You can remove it at any time by clearing site data for inchruler.com in your browser
settings.
3. How we use information
We use the information described above to:
- Operate and maintain the ruler and the site's content pages.
- Understand which features are useful and where the site needs to be improved.
- Detect, diagnose, and fix technical problems and abuse.
- Measure and report aggregate traffic.
- Serve advertising through Google AdSense (see section 5).
- Meet legal obligations when they apply.
4. Cookies and similar technologies
4.1 What cookies are
Cookies are small text files placed on your device by websites you visit. They allow a site
to remember information between page loads or visits. Similar technologies include
localStorage, web beacons, and pixel tags.
4.2 Categories we use
- Strictly necessary: not currently used — the ruler requires no login or cart state. Local storage is used for calibration, as described above.
- Analytics: Google Analytics cookies help us understand aggregate traffic patterns (see section 5.2).
- Advertising: Google AdSense and its partners may set advertising cookies to deliver and measure ads (see section 5.1).
For a category-by-category breakdown and opt-out links, see the cookie policy.
4.3 Managing cookies
Most browsers let you view, block, or delete cookies from the settings panel. Blocking cookies from this site will not affect the ruler itself, but may reduce the accuracy of aggregate analytics.
5. Third-party services
5.1 Google AdSense
We use Google AdSense to show ads on this site. Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads. Google may use the DoubleClick cookie and similar technologies to serve ads to you based on your visits to this and other sites on the Internet. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, and you can read more about how Google uses advertising data at policies.google.com/technologies/ads. European users can also manage preferences at youronlinechoices.eu.
Third-party vendors and ad networks besides Google may also serve ads on this site through Google's ad stack; their use of cookies is governed by their own privacy policies.
5.2 Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand traffic patterns. Google Analytics collects the information described in section 2.2 and processes it on our behalf. Google Analytics IP anonymization is enabled by default in current versions of the service. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
5.3 Hosting and CDN
The site is served as static files through a web host and (depending on routing) a content delivery network. These providers may log request metadata, including IP address and user agent, for security and reliability purposes.
6. Data retention
Automatically collected information is retained as long as reasonably necessary to run and improve the site, or for as long as required by law. Analytics data is retained according to the default retention policy of the analytics provider. Calibration data in your browser's local storage is retained until you clear it.
7. Your privacy rights
7.1 GDPR (European Economic Area and UK)
If you are in the EEA or the United Kingdom, you have rights under the GDPR / UK GDPR, including:
- Right of access to personal data we hold about you.
- Right to rectification of inaccurate data.
- Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten").
- Right to restriction of processing.
- Right to data portability.
- Right to object to processing, including for direct-marketing purposes.
- Right to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
- Right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.
7.2 CCPA / CPRA (California)
If you are a California resident, you have rights under the CCPA / CPRA, including:
- Right to know what personal information is collected, used, and disclosed.
- Right to delete personal information, subject to legal exceptions.
- Right to correct inaccurate personal information.
- Right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information.
- Right to limit the use of sensitive personal information.
- Right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
We do not sell personal information in the traditional sense. Use of third-party advertising cookies may, under some definitions of "sharing" in California law, qualify as sharing; users who want to limit this can use the Google Ads Settings opt-out linked in section 5.1.
7.3 How to exercise your rights
Email privacy@inchruler.com with your request. Please describe the right you want to exercise. We aim to respond within the timeframes required by applicable law (typically 30 days for GDPR and 45 days for CCPA).
8. Children's privacy
This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
9. International data transfers
Because our providers (analytics, advertising, hosting) operate globally, your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own, including countries whose data-protection laws differ from those in your home jurisdiction. Where required, these providers rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses.
10. Do Not Track
Because there is no industry consensus on how to interpret Do Not Track browser signals, we do not currently respond to them. Users who want to limit tracking should use the opt-out tools referenced in section 5.
11. Security
We apply reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information handled on our behalf, including TLS for all traffic. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or the law. Updates will be reflected in the "Last reviewed" date at the top of this page. Substantive changes will be noted in the first section of the policy.
