How to read a ruler in inches

Reading inches on a ruler is easy once you know that the space between two whole-inch numbers is split in halves, then quarters, eighths, and sixteenths — each with a slightly shorter tick mark. The awkward part is that calipers, drawings, and product listings often give decimal inches (3.54", 12.362", 0.14"), while the ruler is marked in fractions. What the tick marks on an inch ruler mean
Most inch rulers are divided into sixteenths. Between any two whole-inch numbers you will see fifteen ticks of four different lengths:

Machinist and engineering rulers add a 1/32" or 1/64" scale (often on the opposite edge), and some also carry a decimal-inch scale in tenths and hundredths. A standard 12-inch school ruler is marked to 1/16" on the inch edge and to 1 mm on the metric edge.
Decimal inches to ruler fractions
To locate a decimal value, separate the whole inches from the decimal part, then multiply the decimal part by 16 and round to the nearest whole number — that is the number of sixteenth ticks past the inch mark. For 3.54": 0.54 × 16 = 8.64, which rounds to 9, so 3.54" is a hair past the 9/16" tick after the 3" mark (3 9/16" = 3.5625"). The table covers values that come up often:

Reading a measurement step by step
- Line up the object's edge with the zero end of the ruler — on many rulers zero is the physical end; on others there is a short margin before the first mark.
- Read the last whole-inch number the object passes.
- Count the sixteenth ticks past that number. Use the tick lengths as landmarks: the long half-inch tick is 8/16, the quarter ticks are 4/16 and 12/16.
- Reduce the fraction: 8/16 = 1/2, 12/16 = 3/4, 10/16 = 5/8, and so on.
- If the edge falls between ticks, estimate to the nearest half-tick (about 1/32") — that is roughly the limit of what the eye can judge on a printed scale.
Common mistakes
- Starting from 1 instead of 0. A reading taken from the "1" mark is one inch too short.
- Mixing up 1/8 and 1/16 ticks. Count the ticks between two quarter marks: if there are three, the scale is in sixteenths; if one, it is in eighths.
- Reading the metric edge as inches. Centimeters are divided into ten; inches into sixteen. If the small ticks come in groups of ten, you are on the cm side.
- Reading a worn or uncalibrated ruler. An on-screen ruler that has not been calibrated can be off by several millimeters; a credit-card calibration fixes that.
Inches and centimeters on the same ruler
